I liked the video. I posted it on my page at cdlofit.com (a Rutherford creation). I added it to my blog and posted a link on my Twitter and Facebook page. It was a good example of how to educate the general public on trucking issues.
Don’t be discouraged by Rutherford’s typical cynical comment. He’s a 21st century version of PT Barnum.
He is good at creating discussion and getting truckers to come to his “learn to be an owner-operator” shows. What he doesn’t tell them is the deck is stacked hopelessly against them being even moderately successful.
He does sell them lots of DVD’s and other stuff though (not to mention business consulting, web advertising, etc.) He’s a bald version of Billy Mays without the rapid-fire retoric or engaging smile.
Your comment is quite interesting Mr. Rutherford. Our industry, which you claim to be a major part of regarding helping truckers, has a serious parking problem…and all you have to say to those of us speaking out about this issue is – “boring.”
Way to go Mr. Rutherford. What an intelligent way to tell OTR truckers you truly don’t care about the problems they face out on the road.
Rutherford does have a point … the video is “informational, timely and true” — However, the presentation is BORING — the video aspect and the reading of the report from the Feds is DRY.
I am confident that the intent in producing the video was beyond reproach and well meaning — its simply the presentation.
And as we all know in this electronic age, its not only the message but the presentation that counts.
So, in defense of Kevin Rutherford he is correct in his opinion in describing the video boring … but I’ve listened to Kevin on Sirius Radio … and at times .. Kevin, you are boring too.
So, how about Kevin Rutherford and the Schnaffer’s collaborating and producing a video that not only contains the needed information regarding the need for improvements in truck parking throughout the USA … but also presents it in a way that keeps the viewers interest and creates a “call to action” for the professional truck driver, the carriers and the motoring public to get involved?
Or is Mr. Rutherford so tied into the ATA , the TCA, OOIDA and his own financial endeavors that he deems himself too good to come back down to earth?
I’m sorry the production does not have explosions, fireworks & drama but the fact is the people who have put forth effort in the past few months actually are Truck Drivers who work full time & do not have offices, desks.
Cell phones with Video to record in a drive through manner while enroute to make an on-time delivery was all the time or money available to record the boring video.
Then those persons took the initiative to send the footage to others who took out of their personal overloaded responsibilities to put something together to help educate the general public AT REQUEST from concerned NON Truckers who want to be better informed about how THEY can understand trucking better.
Anyone out there who has lots of free time & money to produce a video that has all the bells & whistles that Y’all need are more that welcome to make one.
It sure would help the few contributors out & then they could actully get other work done besides defending the quality to people inside the industry.
FRED GOT VIRGINIA TO TAKE THE 2 HOUR SIGNS DOWN!
With the boring Video & all his other non-stop hard work when no one wanted to help him out.
When he asked for flyers to be made there was complaining, whining, fighting and jealousy! Ridiculous!
Boring is better than nothing. $1.00 is better than No Dollar
1000 Videos would be Fantastic but who has the time to take off work, drive to Virginia & sit all night to Videotape the Chaos that occurs at sundown that no one sees except Sleepy Truckers crossing their fingers for a Safe spot to sleep?
If anyone can produce a more EXCITING VIDEO please share it with us so we can all HELP by spreading the word.
OK Everyone I think Mr Rutherford got the message…:) ( Gotta love all of you!)
TJ had an interesting remark in His above comment”;
“Or is Mr. Rutherford so tied into the ATA , the TCA, OOIDA and his own financial endeavors that he deems himself too good to come back down to earth?”
I believe TJ is calling him out? hmmm! Way to Go TJ!!!!
In other words what we should be telling Mr Rutherford is: if you’re going to criticize someone then you must be able to offer your assistance …Especially IF you believe in the cause….or say you believe in it!
My opinion: Drivers watch and feel and understand the video.. They can relate to everything on there.
The general public will not be able to relate as well and will may need a hook to make them become emotionally connected. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to do that.
If there are those out there reading this blog who have a heartfelt concern about Trucker Parking, Jason’s Law Hr 2156, and a sincerity for the improvement of TRUCKER SAFETY, please send ideas on how to “GET THE PUBLIC EMPATHY” for Truck Drivers. Perhaps then we can create a video, ” For Them” ( It’s kind of like making a commercial)
As I tell my kids when they come to visit: If you see something broken …don’t criticize it…FIX IT! ( Pretty much what TJ is saying to Kevin)
And to FRED and JB!! GOD BLESS YOU!! You are an inspiration to us all!
Thanks TJ for being such a big part in getting Hope Rivenburg to GATS!! HR 2156 will ensure more safe parking for Drivers and The Rivenburg Presence at GATS will play a big Major Part in it!
We all know who has put forth effort and who has spent money to hinder it. Trucker Safety is the issue, Highway Safety, saving lives. It doesn’t matter how you get there, just as long as you get there.
Heres another Video I previously did not have time to post Click > “Jason’s Law” for Awareness of HR 2156 & S 971
We are all doing the best we can with limited resources so anyone who wants to contribute , this is your invitation.
Yes i agree that there is a parking problem, but the information in the you tube clip is wrong what about the TA 16 miles north of Jessup. Also there is a Pilot 35 miles north. Maybe you should do some research before you post. I know you will just delete this response, because anyone that disagree with you is a threat to you. please respond
It is not mine, I did not make it, I did not produce it, I did not narrate it, I did not distribute it as widely as Fred and others have.
In fact, I felt like I slacked off in helping Fred in his Mission to have the Commonwealth on Virginia Remove the 2 hour Time limit signs so I took this informational Video he was tweeting out on Twitter and put it here on this site.
I have never stayed at the Jessup, MD TA myself.
This is an “Informational Video” made for the Non-Trucking Community to help them understand what a Trucker sees at the end of His/Her 11 Hour shift of driving in any number of States.
For some reason though I get an enormous amount of credit for things I have absolutely nothing to do with.
If you would like more research of this particular video or situation, Please Email Fred Shaffner at TheAmericanDriver@yahoo.com
Which by the way, it was Fred who did INDEED get those 2 hour time limit signs REMOVED from Virginia Rest Areas after utlizing this You Tube Video and others to EDUCATE people.
The credit for Fred’s VICTORY in Virginia was summarily taken by a Big Trucking Organization to which that chronicle will be written very shortly.
No Desiree, you DID NOT get what I was trying to tell you. I was simply asking why was there old information put on your site to help “Jason’s law”? When this Video was made there might have been only the 1 truck stop, not the 2 i mentioned. Also I have seen and I understand BOTH side’s of this Twitter war!! I have no side I will talk to all parties involved. I’ve done quite a bit of free lance writing and i love reading other people’s site’s. It’s a bad habit of mine to fact-check writing.
Dear Ben:
I guess I still do not understand what you are saying. This particular video was not made for “Jason’s Law”, it was made to present a visual for the issue in Virginia to have the 2 hour time limit removed because it violated Federal Law that Truckers are bound by with regards to “Hours of Service”.
I had no part in this Video production , nor did I have any part in the other You Tube which is narrated by Allen Smith from “Ask the Trucker” for “Jason’s Law”
I merely added this video as a courtesy for Information.
I have barely had enough time to learn this wordpress so I just grabbed it from Fred of The American Driver and put it up to help out.
I really know very little about how, or where, or who made it.
I’m not sure if you understand, but the video was not put up for Jason’s Law, it was put up to support JB and Fred Schaffner of http://www.theAmericanDriver.com because Fred were working so hard, fighting for our nations drivers, to get the 2 hr parking law eliminated.
Just a reminder: Law enforcement was waking drivers up after 2 hours and forcing them to drive without their full break….making them break Federal Law.
That’s what this video is about….THANK YOU FRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, although Jason’s Law is about Safe Trucker Parking ( and that’s what’s most likely confusing you), this video was put on the site as a courtesy and in support and appreciation for Fred Schaffner
Twitter War? There isn’t really a twitter war. There are us who want to change things and make a difference in life for the better….and those who hate us for doing so.
Desiree
The point i was trying to make is that you posted a video that was probably right when it is made. The information is false now. I gave you 2 instances of that. If this snippet of Information has nothing to do with “Jason’s law” why is under that name.
I am a truck driver for much the same reasons you are. I have never had a problem parking anywhere in the U.S.A. All this talk about 2 hour limits, yes the signs are posted but i have never been awakened by any form of law enforcement and asked to move. Its real easy if you get told to move.
1.Ask the officer to call for DOT assistance. Now if DOT still tells you to move tell him you want it in writing that you can move to the nearest safe parking area making sure to have the badge # and a working contact #. You still don’t move. You start calling DOT for that state which can be found in the front of all motor carrier atlases
2. you call and talk to the supervisor of the DOT officer that gave you the written authorization. Explain what transpired. Just about every time you do this the supervisor or a supervisor from a different area will want to see this written authorization in person. Every time i this has happened the driver was told to go back to bed. I’ve now of at least 20 driver that had that happen to this year. They did what i mentioned and there was not 1 ticket issued.
You have to remember we fall under federal law not state law. Any state law that contradicts our governing law’s can and should be challenged. Most driver’s either don’t know or are scared to talk to any law enforcement.
I agree with some of your points, but i think you go about it the wrong way. If you want to get anywhere you need a creditable person as your spokesman.
You are still confused.
The 2 hour parking signs in Virginia have NOW been REMOVED because Fred Shaffner from http://www.the americandriver.com and his Brother “JB” who worked diligently to go to the Commonwealth of Virginia to take those digns down.
This video was made BEFORE that happen but it was THIS YEAR and AFTER Jason Rivenburg was murdered. It is NOT a JASONS LAW INFORMATIONAL VIDEO.
But, it was made to MY understanding by the same person FOR Fred Not ME and made around the same time as the Jason’s Law Video, which I will post on this site today now that I have time.
Ben, you are talking about something that is already completed and finished. The Virgina issue came up last year on Twitter to me the same week that Jason Rivenburg was murdered.
I was not aware of the issue prior to that but Fred Shaffner and other were.
You can study it with Fred and/or visit the archived “Blog Talk Radio” from Allen Smith that were done with VDOT Media Representitive Jefferey Caldwell when he called us to begin a dialogue to sort the issue out.
It does not appear you have done proper research on the topic to understand what has transpired as a result of this boring video.
boring
Thanks Kevin for you spell-binding comment. It’s been a real privledge having you visit my site and give your educated thought provoking remark.
The Informational Video was created by Friends on Twitter and put together for the website The American Driver
Fred & JB Shaffner has worked on their own dime to go toe to toe with the Commonwealth of Virginia to help all Drivers.
I see you work in some area of the CDL Industry so I am compelled to ask you,
Are you part of the problem? Or Part of the Solution?
Have a Nice Day Sweet Pea! 🙂

Dear Ben:
Part of my Social Media Experiment is to show how eagerly people want to comment without paying attention.
If you will read the above comments you will see that:
1. I did not make this video
2. It was not made for me or about me
3. This video was posted on many different sites but negative comments about it are generally directed only at me.
Why do you suppose that is?
I put this You Tube on this site as a courtesy to Fred Shaffner of http://www.theamericandriver.com
